Migraine: Common Symptoms

You may have migraines if you are experiencing any of these symptoms:

  • Visual disturbances about 30 minutes prior to getting a migraine. Migraine sufferers report visual disturbances such as an aura or halo, flashing lights, spots, and wavy lines. The visual disturbances are followed by a throbbing headache.
  • Severe headache accompanied by a throbbing or pulsating sensation typically on one side of the head.
  • Headache pain worsens with increased physical activity.
  • Nausea, vomiting, or both.
  • Light and/or noise hypersensitivity. Migraine sufferers may feel the need to retreat to a dark, quiet room for relief.

The following tests and procedures may help you find out what is causing migraines:

  • Online Self-assessments – Self-assessments, such as the Candidiasis Self-assessment and the Magnesium Assessment, can help you determine some of the root cause(s) of your chronic conditions. Learn more about Self-assessments.
  • CT (computed tomography) scan – May be ordered to rule out brain disorders or headaches caused by chronic sinusitis.
  • X-rays – May also be used if sinusitis is strongly suspected.
  • A neck x-ray – Can reveal arthritis or spinal problems.
  • Other tests    May include an MRI (magnetic resonance imaging), EEG (electroencephalogram), lumbar puncture, ultrasound testing, and cerebral angiography, which are only performed if there is reason to suspect an underlying disease.
