Circadian Rhythm Disorder has many causes, some of which may be interrelated.
Temporary CRD is caused by changes in daily lifestyle, or by an acute, passing illness. For the most part, it is easily remedied. Some of the temporary causes include:
- A switch to daylight savings
- Travel through different time zones (jet lag)
- A change of work schedule from day to evening
- An illness such as the flu
Chronic CRD isn’t as easily resolved and usually requires longer types of treatment to reestablish healthy rhythms. Chronic CRD can be caused by:
- Loss of vision
- Fluctuations in hormones (such as during menopause)
- Underlying chronic conditions such as candida, heavy metal toxicity, adrenal fatigue syndrome, and chronic fatigue syndrome
- Genetics – A genetic component has been found that establishes a person’s propensity to be an early morning riser or a “night owl.”3
